Vietnam is more like... (Cambodia, Laos, Thai) or (Japan, China, Korea.)?
Alright, well I am doing a little project on Vietnam for my class... and I was wondering if Vietnam was CULTURALLY more like (Cambodia, Laos, Thai, Burma, etc.) or (Japan, China, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong.. etc.). At first I thought Vietnam was a lot more like Cambodia, Laos, etc. because they lived near these countries, and should have been influenced by them. But since China did take over Vietnam at one point, I was not so sure. I am Vietnamese myself and a lot of our traditions seem to come from China.... as for CITIZENS, I was just wondering you guys thought Vietnamese people looked more like (Cambodia, Laos, Thai, Burma, etc.) people or (Japan, China, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong.. etc.) people. And by the way, how is Vietnam's economy? Do you think they are ranked up with (Japan, China, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong.. etc.) or (Cambodia, Laos, Thai, Burma, etc.). Keep in mind I am asking three questions on Culture, Citizens (appearance), and economy. Thank you!

Well Vietnam and all of those other cultures are not similar at all... Well Vietnamese looks like their neighboring countries. Economy: They do produce similar items like Rice, and fruits of the same kind,

They look like Thais, Cambodians, and Laotians. Even if they were influenced by the Chinese, the culture is far from the Standard Oriental (Japanese, Korean, Chinese). Chinese culture is present everywhere in this part of Asia. There are important communities there. It's more South East Asian. I noticed this firsthand.

Vietnam is culturally more akin to Cambodia, Laos, and Thailand (Southeast Asia) than to China, Taiwan, Korea (East Asia). While Vietnamese was influenced to a great extent by China (chopsticks, noodles, Chu Nom script), even to the point of near colonization - they retained their culture and promoted nationalism from the moment they gained independence from China up to the present-day. The modern-day peoples of Southern China (Guangdong, Hong Kong, Fujian, Taiwan, Zhejiang, Shanghai) are all descendants from former Yueh (Viet) peoples who lived in an area which stretched from Champa in Southeast Asia up to the Yellow RIver. (Viet Nam means "Southern Yueh or Southern Viets" - these so-called Southern Chinese [like Hongkongers, etc.] were traditionally the "Northern Yueh or Northern Viets" who adopted Chinese culture and language during the Han dynasty of China) With regards to appearance, I personally think that Vietnamese people are way in the middle between East Asians and Southeast Asians - they have the straight hair, thin lips, almond eyes, and aquiline noses of the East Asians, as well as the brown skin, black hair, and well-built bodies of Southeast Asians. Those who live in Northern Vietnam tend to look more Chinese, and those in Southern Vietnam tend to look somewhat Khmer or Southeast Asian. Economy-wise, Vietnam is already booming, and is a developing country. However, its' economic prowess does not match that of neighboring Tigers, such as Hong Kong, Thailand, Malaysia, or Singapore. It nevertheless now have built highways and modern infrastructure.
