I am an avid swimmer, living in Cambodia for a while and there is only one olympic sized swimming pool which is really run down. I went today and the water is very green and you cannot see below the surface. I am a bit desperate to swim, but don't want to get sick. What do you think?

It probably is bad. Funny thing... last year I spent the night with a friend and his apartment had a pool, we were board late that night so we decided to jump in the pool. We splashed around for a while till we got board and went back inside. The next day we were walking around and saw the pool and WOW, it was a nasty looking dark green color. We didnt know that the night before because it was dark and no lights in or around the pool. We still laugh about that one.

Chlorine or bromine are used to sanitize the water so that no disease causing organisms grow in the water. The green color is likely caused by algae growing in the water. Although the algae are not likely going to cause disease, the presence of the algae indicates there is no chlorine in the pool which means there could be OTHER organisms growing, some of which could be disease causing. In addition, if the water is so cloudy that you cannot see below the surface, it is also likely that the water is not being filtered which also increases the chance of the water being unhealthy. So, you make the call. If you want to take the risk, go ahead and jump in. If it were me, I'd take up running for my exercise and run as fast as I could from that pool.

why dont you ask whoever owns it if you can fix it up it wont take much you just need a heap of chlorine and some algaecide and as long as the filter is good it should clear up relatively quickly

If you really have a need to swim, you can always use a cap for your hair and earplugs so it doesn't give you an ear infection. After swim run home and take a shower to get clean!
